Implicit learning, development, and education

International audience; The present chapter focuses on implicit learning processes, and aims at showing that these processes could be used to design new methods of education or reeducation. After a brief definition of what we intend by implicit learning, we will show that these processes operate efficiently in development, from infancy to aging. Then, we will discuss the question of their resistance to neurological or psychiatric diseases. Finally, in a last section, we will comment on their potential use within an applied perspective.
The effect of explicit knowledge on sequence learning: A graded account

In this paper, we study the effect of conscious knowledge on implicit sequence learning. To do so, in three sequence learning experiments, we manipulated (1) the extent to which instructions were intentional vs. incidental - intentional participants were informed of the existence of sequential regularities, and (2) the amount of explicit knowledge given to participants about the stimulus material. Results indicated that explicit knowledge improves sequence learning, as indexed by an increase in reaction times when the training sequence is unexpectedly replaced by another one. Aging effects and feasibility of statistical learning tasks across modalities

Knowledge on statistical learning (SL) in healthy elderly is scarce. Theoretically, it is not clear whether aging affects modality-specific and/or domain-general learning mechanisms. Practically, there is a lack of research on simplified SL tasks, which would ease the burden of testing in clinical populations. Against this background, we conducted two experiments across three modalities (auditory, visual and visuomotor) in a total of 93 younger and older adults. Aging is associated with declines in sensorimotor function. Several studies have demonstrated that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, can be combined with training to mitigate age-related cognitive and motor declines. However, in some cases, the application of tDCS disrupts performance and learning.
